Phobos

"Fear is a little death… Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." (Frank Herbert).

2020 changed our world forever.

It was a difficult time for all of us, filled with many fears: fear for our loved ones, fear of the future - who knows what it prepares for us, and, finally, fear of illness, we still continue to live with it.

All of it has been reflected in my work - when I was creating my Phobos, I asked myself - where fears are hidden and how to overcome them. At some point, I realized that if we face our fears, we will meet our own reflection there. There are many fears, and they all live inside us - that is why I decided to make a doll with three pairs of metal eyes - so that the viewer, peering into this horrifying face, would see a distorted image of himself in the reflection. Our fears are just the reflections of ourselves, and nothing else..

Phobos is a creature that has neither gender nor age. It is incapable of experiencing either feelings or emotions.

It has six eyes, because fear multiplies when you believe in it, and distorts, taking on bizarre forms.

It has sharp teeth, because fear gnaws at us at night, causing more and more suffering to the one who tries to drive it away.

It has soft thin tentacles, because it insinuatingly and imperceptibly enters the soul of those who believe in it.

Its parchment parched skin is wrinkled with age, because my Phobos is as old as the world, and there is the emptiness inside it, because fear is just a reflection of our thoughts.

Phobos is blind, like any fear is blind, and he is holding a snake as a symbol of healing. As a killing creature, it means death and destruction; as a creature that periodically changes skin - life and resurrection. Fear can kill, but it can also make us stronger.

Its colors are gray, black and marengo - the colors of flame and smoke, it burns while there is something to burn. If you stop feeding the flame, only black ash will remain, and the smoke will dissipate into nowhere.

This work is very autobiographical for me. While working on it for more than 5 months, I tried to convey the very nature of fear.

By realizing that fear lives inside, sucking out our strength and trying to control our emotions, we can free ourselves and get rid of it forever. We are stronger. And we will stay where the fear has passed. No wonder a lizard lurks on Fear's shoulder - an ancient symbol of rebirth.

Shaman

This Shaman has a Summer Solstice Day nature.  Born on the eve of Kupala Night, he carries the power of the Sun and the Fire, he is sunny, joyful and energetic.

The shaman enjoys life and sings his song for others to enjoy with him.  He dances for the sky and for the earth, for the Sun and for water, for all and for each of us, because dancing is a joy, it is a creation, it is a power.

The shaman is wearing magical amulets and bracelets with runes.  They are symbols of power, health, abundance and the pursuit of the goal.

Magic feathers and pendants give him a strong protection, and a smile helps make our dreams come true.

Author's doll. Fabric, primed and painted with acrylics, modeled by hand sewing in my own technique. Leather bracelet and drum, hand-made according to the Celtic culture. Amulets, fangs and original beads, handmade from clay.

My Angel is a messenger, a herald. He prays. He is full of love and sadness.

He cannot change anything. All he can do is pray and share his love to the world. His dark red clothes symbolize a special mind, the ability to protect, and lead people.

These abilities give the Angel the strength to fulfill his mission - bring Love, because that's why he was sent into this world.

He's not perfect. He suffered. Instead of feet, he has wheels, made from the wreckage of an old watch. Only quills remained from the feathers. The angel burned, traces of ash, pain and sorrow remained on his body and clothes.

The angel suffered, but he is still smiling, and his eyes are full of Love.

Kikimora

In my interpretation Kikimora is a swamp creature, a kind and cute spirit who comes from the swamp. She is a part of nature, and she is the Nature by herself. She is green like the grass, fresh and sincere, like the ponds. Her clothes are covered by plant motifs. She has mushrooms on her back, she is carrying them with love and respect, as they are the part of her personality. According to the Slavic mythology it is said that Kikimora can be identified by her wet footprints. Kikimora might help out with household chores. When the house is in order, Kikimora looks after the kids, protects the house and does all housework. If not, she whistles, breaks dishes, and makes noises at night.

My Kikimora is rather a helper, a pretty lady with a great sense of humor, who is ready to protect and support her owner.

A magic staff is made from the branch of a tree, collected in Karkonoshy mountains (Poland) after a hurricane. It was whitened by the strong winds, stayed strong through the rain and snow. It brings strength and potency, might and intensity to the owner.

A coin in the necklace came from Cyprus, 1963 year of production. There is a flying seagull on one side, and a boat on the other one. Brings freedom and a fresh side of mind, happiness and new points of view.

Mokosha

My doll represents the oldest Slavic goddess, Mokosha, or Matka (the Mother Earth).

This is Mother Earth, who was protecting people for thousands of years. She’s carrying a smiling healthy baby in her hands, peacefully observing this world.

I created her as a powerful creature, neither a human nor an animal. She has got a human face, four arms and a tail, which accentuate her identity to nature, to all species on Earth, as she is the Mother of all living beings.

I used sand-yellow color to an earthy brown sandstone with turquoise and midnight blue, in combination of the medium browns to light tans in sandstone with deep purple accents. These colors give a feeling of safety. They symbolize calmness, trust, and security.

My doll has horns, these are her weapons, as well as a sense of magical power. I covered her body and her clothes with Celtic runes and Slavic symbols of love, power and protection.

The goddess has shaman attributes: funks, rings, beads, and feathers, woven in her hair, which bring her confidence and power. Mokosha and her child both wear Celtic rune amulets of security.

As for me, this doll is a perfect symbol to represent a sense of security.

Mokosha, as Mother, protects her child, gives it the security of knowing, the feeling of safety and love.
